Antique Bibles make a wonderful family heirloom to pass down to the next generation.
EBay has a category of antique bibles which most buyers buy for the ornamental design. It’s easy to get burned buying antique Bibles, especially those massive, family Bibles published in the end of the 19th century. Sometimes unscrupulous dealers deliberately destroy antique Bibles because the leaves are worth more than the book. Hobbyists and theologians have expressed wonderment at the good prices one can find on favorite antique bibles.

As you collect, you may develop a deeper appreciation for the history of the Bible and the early printers who had difficulty getting the Bibles published. You should be able to determine the rarity of the Bible and the market demand for it. Notice the age, size and the condition of the Bible. An older Bible generally costs more than a newer one. See if all the pages are there as the condition plays an important part in determining the value of the Bible. Mostly, prices for antique Bibles begin at around $3,000.
It used to take 2 to 3 years or more to print and bind a whole Bible. Bindings on antique Bibles are usually hardcover, either full leather or halfcalf. Leather only lasts between 144 to 300 years, so the binding may not last on your Bible. The value of the Bible doesn’t depend on the binding, but on the quality of the pages.

History
Protestants today are largely unaware of their own history, and unaware of the Geneva Bible (which is textually 95% the same as the King James Version, but 50 years older than the King James Version, and not influenced by the Roman Catholic Rheims New Testament that the King James translators admittedly took into consideration). William Tyndale wanted to use the same 1516 Erasmus text as a source to translate and print the New Testament in English for the first time in history.

The original 1611 King James contained the Apocrypha, and King James threatened anyone who dared to print the Bible without the Apocrypha with heavy fines and a year in jail.
As expensive and popular as these Antique Bibles have become eBay may be the best way one may be able to afford to acquire one.
